Twokinds is an ongoing manga-styled webcomic that involves a human named Trace Legacy, a previous Grand Templar and guardian of the land, and Flora, a Keidran (catgirl). After losing his memory in a mysterious battle, Trace finds himself in the company of Flora, who, as Trace gradually begins to learn, belongs to a race of people who are enemies of his kind. As friendship conficts with racial differences, Trace and Flora find themselves in a situation more critical then either of them can imagine.
Main characters
- Trace: Trace Legacy, the hero of the story. He was originally a human of some authority having risen through the ranks and become the Grand Templar through force, though much of his past remains shrouded in mystery as a result of his memory loss. As Tom himself has put it, it is strange how amnesia changed him from a 20 year old killer into a love-struck sixteen-year-old...
- Flora: The heroine, as it were, of our story. A keidran female, it is through her that we see most aspects of keidran life. Although a slave to humans in her childhood, her human family treated her almost as an equal, which never gave her the deep-seated resentment most Keidran foster towards humans. Though she comes off as aggressive and untrustworthy at first (attempting to murder Trace at one point), she and Trace grow closer as traveling companions as the story progresses.
- Keith: The only basitin that we have met. He says he needs Trace for his "mission", which seems to involve a political problem but seems more so for his own ambitions to be allowed to return to his country. However little more is said other than that Basitins live on an island close to keidran territory. Keith is a warrior in the typical sword slinging fashon, no magic for this guy.
- Neutral: A mask that emphasizes the neutrality of existence and therefore must make sure races have equal war instead of something blatantly one-sided. Neutral's original plan to pit Flora and Trace against each other was ruined and Neutral was defeated by Trace. Now the only way neutrality can occur is with an allowance of a new race.
- Natani: A wolf keidran who, along with her brother, Zen, attepmted to kill Trace under the order of their king. She has since given up the contract, and now travels with the group, after several humans investigating the commotion spotted and threatened to kill her after she was injured. Not much has yet been revealed about her personality, but she has had a few "accidental" close encounters with Keith.
About the author
Artist and writer Tom Fischbach was born on July 28 1987 in Massachusetts, and grew up living with his Korean mother and American father. After spending a short time in Hawaii due to his father's military service, Fischbach and his family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he currently lives.
Though he originally attempted a novel, he eventually chose to work in the comic medium instead. Fischbach cites racism he has experienced as an inspiration for his work. The three races of the comic -- Humans, Keidran, and Basitin -- all have many misgivings about one another, to the point of putting prices on the heads of all members of other races. But with the most powerful human of all having lost his memory, and now falling steadily in love with a member of the Keidran race, much of the strife and trouble related to the conflict between races is illustrated.
